12 February 2015: Event:  PUBLICATION BY THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND OF THE OFFICIAL WEBSITE AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT THE SHARED CONVERSATIONS

The Official Website and Resources were today published by the Church of England for the Shared Conversations on Scripture, Mission and Sexuality. The official website has been launched at: www.sharedconversations.org. There are two booklets. The first booklet outlines the thinking behind the conversations, the process and their place in the life of the church. The second booklet comprises four essays, with varying views, which participants in the conversations are asked to read prior to taking part in the conversations. To see and download the material.

The LGBTI Anglican Coalition held a meeting in London on December 13, 2014 about the Mutual Conversations in the absence of David Porter, the Archbishop of Canterbury's Reconciliation Officer, who had to cancel at the last minute owing to a family bereavement. 17 December 2014: Announcement:  APPOINTMENT OF FIRST CHURCH OF ENGLAND WOMAN BISHOP

Reverend Libby Lane has been announced as the first female bishop for the Church of England, just a month after a historic change to canon law. She will become the new Bishop of Stockport, a post that has been vacant since May.         

The Reverend Pat Storey was installed by the Church of Ireland as Bishop of Meath and Kildare, the first female Anglican bishop in the UK and Ireland, on the 29th November 2013

10 December 2014: Legislation: TRANSFORMATION OF CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS TO MARRIAGES

From today, many members of the Church of England, lay and ordained, will be able to convert their civil partnership to marriage. Canon Jeremy Pemberton and Fr Andrew Foreshaw-Cain will no longer be the only married gay priests in the Church of England – numbers of lesbian and gay clergy are known to be converting. The House of Bishops is confronted with the challenge of disciplining or ignoring or accepting the presence of same-sex married clergy across the country.

17 November 2014: News: WOMEN BISHOPS IN THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

On the 17th November 2014 the Church of England formally approved plans for women bishops. The vote on Monday at the general synod meeting at Church House in Westminster gave the final seal of approval to the legislation, following its passage through Parliament in October. The decision has been welcomed by long-term campaigners for change, who see it as step towards widening female participation in the Church.

Members of the LGBTI Anglican Coalition warmly congratulates all those who have been involved in the campaign, and gives thanks for a long overdue change.

From 15 to 17 September, the College of Bishops of the Church of England will be meeting for two days to start the process of Shared Conversations on Sexuality, Scripture and Mission. 

The LGBTI Anglican Coalition welcomes this first step and our members will be praying for a successful outcome to the meeting.  Although we have reservations about the context in which this is taking place – articulated very clearly in the recent letter sent from the Trustees of Changing Attitude to all those attending the meeting – nevertheless we welcome the initiative, and hope it bears fruit............

17 May 2014  10:30-16:00 : Lecture: INCLUSIVE CHURCH 2014 LECTURE “WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LIBERAL CHRISTIANITY”

The lecture will take place on Thursday 10th July, 6-8 p.m.  at All Saints, Pavement High Ousegate, York YO1 8RZ. It is taking place in York to coincide with the beginning of General Synod.

The 2014 Inclusive Church Lecture will be given by Linda Woodhead. Linda is the Professor of Sociology of Religion at Lancaster University. Many will be aware of Linda’s recent contribution to the Church Times ‘Church Health Check’ series.

17 May 2014  10:30-16:00 : Workshop: "LIVING IN PROPHETIC HOPE" CHANGING ATTITUDE GREATER LONDON EVENT ST MARTIN-IN-THE-FIELDS LONDON WC2N 4JJ

This workshop prays through and with the stories of individuals who have tapped into prophetic hope in the midst of homophobic oppression. It focuses on the story of the martyred Ugandan organizer David Kato, who, with his religious and secular friends, resisted the anti-gay witch-hunts in his own country; and it focuses on the stories of local panelists from Africa and Britain, who have fought for LGBTI and immigrant justice here in London. Through discussion, reflection, and prayer, we hope to discover the ways that God is stirring up prophetic hope in our own lives.

28 March 2014:Press Release: JOINT PRESS RELEASE FROM THE CUTTING EDGE CONSORTIUM AND THE LGBTI ANGLICAN COALITION

RELIGIOUS LEADERS SUPPORT MARRIAGE FOR SAME-SEX COUPLES

A number of religious leaders have signed the statement below. A press conference and photo-call will be held at Friends House, 173 Euston Road, London NW1 2BJ at 11 am on Friday 28 March 2014.

We rejoice that from tomorrow same-sex couples will be able to marry in England and Wales.

As persons of faith, we welcome this further development in our marriage law, which has evolved over the centuries in response to changes in society and in scientific knowledge.

We acknowledge that some (though not all) of the faith organisations to which we belong do not share our joy, and continue to express opposition in principle to such marriages. We look forward to the time, sooner rather than later, when all people of faith will feel able to welcome this development.

1 March 2014: Article: CRACKING THE BINARY CODE: BENNY HAZLEHURST

This paper offers a critique of the ‘binary’ nature of much biblical interpretation and ethical belief in the Church, rejecting simplistic ‘either-or’ approaches to both. Instead there is offered an interpretation of key biblical texts through the lenses of circumstances, needs and motivation. It is argued that, when these factors are taken into account, even for Evangelicals, there is no longer a substantive biblical case against the acceptance of faithful, loving same-sex partnerships and the development of a positive Christian ethic for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. At the very least, the complexity of the interpretive task must lead to greater openness to and acceptance of those from whom we differ.

21 February 2014: Open Letter: LGBTI ANGLICAN COALITION OPEN LETTER TO HOUSE OF BISHOPS REGARDING PASTORAL GUIDANCE ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE, ISSUED 14 FEBRUARY 2014

The statement on the Pastoral Guidance on Same Sex Marriage, issued by the House of Bishops 14 February 2014 has caused a great deal of anger and dismay amongst the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Communities, not least because its tone and action has foreclosed on many of the issues which should be the subject of the facilitated discussions called for in the Pilling Report. We remain committed to these discussions but given the breakdown in trust which has resulted from recent actions it is now even more important that these conversations take place in a way which is not only impartial, but which is seen to be impartial by all of the bodies that are concerned.

We look forward to the opportunity of continued debate, and the open letter, attached, which has been sent to the House of Bishops of the Church of England is intended to help to rebuild some of the ground upon which the debate may take place.

16 February 2014: Press release: LGBTI ANGLICAN COALITION RESPONSE TO THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND HOUSE OF BISHOPS PASTORAL GUIDANCE DOCUMENT ON SAME SEX MARRIAGE. ISSUED 14 FEBRUARY 2014

The LGBTI Anglican Coalition is appalled by the House of Bishops’ recently-issued Pastoral Guidance on Same Sex Marriage, especially in the light of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s presidential address in which it was stated that differing views should be accepted in a spirit of ‘good disagreement’. In this document we see no acceptance of disagreement at all, but instead a heavy-handed and legalistic imposition of discipline.

This guidance is wrong in tone and content, and will further damage the Church’s mission, not only to LGBTI people, but to all people of goodwill who respect justice and truth. It may seek to carry disciplinary authority, but it has no moral authority and cannot command respect. We hope and pray that it will be swiftly withdrawn.

23 January 2014: News: NEWS FROM THE GOVERNMENT EQUALITIES OFFICE

Equal Marriage

Following the December announcement of the timetable for implementing the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013, the Government has today laid before Parliament a series of Statutory Instruments which (subject to the approval of Parliament) will:

 Enable same sex couples to marry in civil and religious ceremonies from 29 March 2014

 Allow marriages of same sex couples in in some British consulates and armed forces bases overseas, and make arrangements for marriages of same sex couples in military chapels, from 3 June 2014.

Civil Partnership Review

The Government has today published a consultation paper on the future of civil partnership in England and Wales. This is the full public consultation required as part of the review of the Civil Partnership Act 2004 under the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013. The consultation runs until 17 April 2014.

13 December 2013: Press Release: FOR IMMEDIATE USE: PRESS RELEASE IN RESPONSE TO THE REPORT FROM THE HOUSE OF BISHOPS’ WORKING GROUP ON HUMAN SEXUALITY (THE PILLING REPORT)

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition welcomes the publication of The Pilling Report and we appreciate that it was made public so soon.

It is good that the report recognises the diversity of theological views on this issue, including within the Evangelical wing of the Church. We are glad that the report denounces homophobia (though it is not clearly enough defined). We believe that it makes it easier for clergy to bless partnerships publicly and it calls for further discussion to try to discern where the Spirit is leading the church.

It is also good that LGB&T clergy will not face intrusive questioning though they are still asked to promise to abide by a code which would exclude most from the kind of loving and supportive relationship which others can enjoy.

We are disappointed that the Report has only mentioned rather than included transgender people in the discussion, despite submissions from transgender and LGB&T Christian organisations.

We are also disappointed that no liturgy of thanksgiving or blessing is proposed, but overall we are thankful for the working party’s effort. We trust and hope that the report may move the Church of England forward.

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition and its member organisations stand ready to support the proposed facilitated conversations both in Dioceses and nationally. We look forward to being fully included in all steps to help the Church of England find a way forward and we value the Pilling report as a useful contribution to the coming debate

We are also convinced that there must be a greater openness to, and a wider understanding, of the extensive range of scientific and theological work that has been, and is currently being undertaken on transgender issues and same-sex issues in addition to those relied upon within the report. We believe that what is presented there is insufficient to provide a strong and reliable foundation for the proposed conversations and we trust that these issues will be further addressed in the coming debate.

10 December 2013: Information: EQUAL MARRIAGE: GOVERNMENT SETS THE DATE FOR FIRST CEREMONIES

The Government in Westminster has announced the timetable for the implementation of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act in England and Wales.

Same-sex couples will now be able to get married in a registry or approved religious premises from 29 March 2014.

15 November 2013: Information: SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, ON TRANSGENDER ISSUES, WHERE ARE WE NOW?

WHY YOU SHOULD WRITE TO YOUR MP.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 was given Royal Assent on 17 July 2013, which means that “marriage of same sex couples is lawful”. Except that, currently, there’s no mechanism to “solemnise” them . In order for an Act of Parliament to take effect, it’s not sufficient for it to be passed and granted Royal Assent. It must be enabled, and this is done by a series of Statutory Instruments.

There are a number of areas which affect transgender people that should be of concern. Please read the article available via the link and make your views known to your Member of Parliament.

1 November 2013: Information: PREPARING FOR PILLING.

 In December 2013, the House of Bishops will receive a report into the Church of England's "Approach to Human Sexuality" from a group chaired by Sir Joseph Pilling. It is understood that the report will then be discussed by the full College of Bishops in January 2014

When the House of Bishops established the review in July 2011 it did so because it wished “To offer proposals on how the continuing discussion within the Church of England about these matters might best be shaped in the light of the listening process. Our intention is to produce a further consultation document” The Pilling report will therefore be a report to the House of Bishops and it will then be for the House to decide, in the light of the report, what proposals and process of consultation it wishes to launch.

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition expresses its appreciation of the discussions it has already had with the Archbishop of Canterbury, and it is now understood that the outcome of these talks will be subsumed into the Pilling Report. There are already leaks about what the Pilling report may contain. See for example:

20 September 2013: Comment: CHURCH OF IRELAND APPOINTS THE FIRST UK AND IRELAND'S WOMAN BISHOP

The Church of Ireland has appointed the UK and Ireland's first woman bishop. The Reverend Pat Storey, a rector in Londonderry, was elected by the Church of Ireland as the Bishop of Meath and Kildare. For details see:

12 September 2013: Comment: CHURCH IN WALES APPROVES WOMEN BISHOPS.

Women bishops will be allowed in the Church in Wales following a landmark yes vote. Bishops within the Church tabled a bill calling for the change and it was finally accepted by its governing body after a previous vote in 2008 narrowly failed. In the breakdown of the current vote, the laity voted 57 for, 14 against, with two abstentions; the clergy section saw 37 voting for and 10 against, while the bishops voted unanimously in favour.

The Venerable Peggy Jackson, Archdeacon of Llandaff, Cardiff,  said: "This morning I wake up in a completely different world."  yesterday's vote "was the day discrimination against women came to an end" but she added that people from both sides of the argument had to live together.

The Church of Ireland gave approval for women bishops in 1990 when its own General Synod passed legislation to ordain women as priests and bishops. In June 2003 the Church in Scotland voted to allow women to assume the rank. Now only the Church of England remains out of step. It is hoped  that the voting in the November General Synod of the Church of England will rectify what is considered by many to be a gross injustice in the Church.

28 August 2013: Resource Document: CHURCH VIEWS ON SEXUALITY: THE MIDDLE GROUND. BY SAVRITI HENSMAN

It is clear that Christians hold a spectrum of views on sexuality and marriage. However, the popular idea that there are two warring blocks that may be labelled ‘traditionalists’ and ‘revisionists’ is simplistic and can be misleading as well as unhelpful.

Current tensions could be reduced and reframed significantly if more church leaders acknowledged the extent of common ground in the middle of this continuum, allowed limited flexibility of practice, and enabled their communities to develop practices of discernment oriented towards the “grace and truth” (John 1.13-15) that lies at the heart of the Christian message.

In this paper, Ekklesia associate Savitri Hensman identifies seven widely held positions on sexuality. She suggests that those with supposedly diametrically opposing views often have more in common than they may at first think.

Equally, she argues, in Christian terms, that coexistence among those sharing a 'middle ground' is not about weak compromise, but instead reflects an approach both deeply rooted in Bible and tradition and open to change as a living community led by the Spirit.

28 August 2013: Comment: SPEECH BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY TO THE EVANGELICAL ALLIANCE

On the 28th August 2013, The Archbishop of Canterbury opened the new headquarters of the Evangelical Alliance. During his speech he told the audience that the Church must “repent” over the way gay and lesbian people have been treated in the past and said most young people viewed Christians as no better than racists on these issues. More to the point, he now understands just how dreadful conservative Christian attitudes seem to anyone under 35. He said "The vast majority of people under 35 think [the church's resistance to gay marriage] is not just incomprehensible but plain wrong and wicked, and they assimilate it to racism and other horrors." While the Church of England has yet to deliver on these issues, this gives hope of a greater awakening by the Church.

Equal marriage becomes law

17 July 2013

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill has successfully completed its parliamentary passage and today received Royal Assent.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 will, for the first time, allow same sex couples to marry in England and Wales in a civil ceremony. It will also allow them to marry in a religious ceremony, where the religious organisation has opted in to such marriages and the minister of religion agrees.

The new legislation also reiterates the Government’s absolute commitment to religious freedom by ensuring that no religious organisation or individual minister can be forced to conduct same sex marriages.

It is noted that the Act now also includes requirement for the Secretary of State to arrange for a review of occupational pension scheme benefits provided to survivors of same sex and opposite sex couples in legal relationships, It is hoped that this review will take account of the circumstances of transgender people who were forced by law to dissolve their marriages before the present legislation was passed.

9 July 2013: Information: UPDATE ON THE HOUSE OF LORDS DISCUSSIONS OF THE EQUAL MARRIAGE BILL. 9 JULY 2013.

The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill has successfully completed its Committee stage in the House of Lords. The next stage in the parliamentary process is Lords Report stage, when Peers have a further opportunity to debate the Bill in the main chamber of the House of Lords. The report stage is scheduled to take place on:

Monday 8 and Wednesday 10 July.

Over three days of Committee, Peers vigorously debated the detailed provisions of the Bill, giving it clause by clause scrutiny. 65 non-Government amendments were tabled, none of which were voted on so they did not result in changes to the Bill.

Government amendments were made to the Bill to clarify that public discussion or criticism of marriage, as regards the sex of the parties to marriage, would not of itself amount to an offence of stirring up hatred because of sexual orientation under the Public Order Act 1986 and also to amend the definition of the governing authorities able to give consent to same sex marriages for those of the Jewish religion, to reflect the current arrangements for the Jewish community. A number of technical amendments were also made, intended to make the Bill work better without changing its effect.

Many Anglicans, gay and straight, catholic, middle of the road and evangelical, support equal marriage. Changing Attitude England has joined the members of the LGB&T Anglican Coalition to offer prayerful support for the House of Lords as they prepare to debate the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill on Monday 3 June. This is a decisive moment for the Bill. A wrecking amendment has been tabled which could threaten its future progress.

We ask you to pray in love. Prayer does not change the mind of God. Offered in love, prayer has the power to change the future and to change us. Prayer offered in openness and trust can channel the infinite, tender love of God which is shared with every person irrespective of their gender, sexuality, race, whether they are people of faith or not.

A meeting between the LGB&T Anglican Coalition and the  Archbishop has been arranged for the 18th April. Major points which the Coalition wishes to put to the Archbishop are as follows:

How does the Archbishop intend to get a better understanding and appreciation of the frustration LGBT Christians are experiencing in the Church of England and what plans does he have to address this? How aware is the Archbishop that some parishes are inhospitable places for LGB&T people? Will he take a lead in helping to make it a safer place for them? If so, how and when does he propose to do this? How much experience does the Archbishop have of transgender people, and what are his thoughts and plans for greater transgender inclusion in the Church of England. What are the Archbishop's views on the Church of England permitting churches to offer prayer and dedication (or prayer and thanksgiving) for couples who have had a civil partnership (or civil marriage) ceremony? What are the Archbishop's views on liturgies of blessing for same sex couples? Summary:

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition is a coalition of all the groups working to encourage the Church of England to be more inclusive of LGB&T people. A clear majority of our organisations strongly support the proposed legislation, in particular we welcome the provision that religious bodies are allowed to opt in voluntarily; no religious body or individual is compelled to act against conscience; married transgender people who apply for full gender recognition will no longer have to dissolve their marriages. We have highlighted several specific issues, including matters that will need to be addressed when the Church of England considers whether or not to opt in, and in relation to religious employment.

Please submit your views in writing to the House of Commons Public Bill Committee which is going to consider the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill.

The Public Bill Committee of the House of Commons is now able to receive written evidence from external sources. The sooner you send in your submission, the more time the Committee will have to take it into consideration.

The Committee is expected to meet for the first time on Tuesday 12 February. The Committee will stop receiving written evidence at the end of the Committee stage on Tuesday 12 March 2013

…….And is there a place for LGBT persons in this model? Absolutely. They’re in the front seat of the van. Why? I’ll give you three reasons. One, because a terrifying, murderous and persecuted history, which has left LGBT persons so marginalised, scapegoated, and diminished in the church it’s astonishing they’re still here, makes LGBT persons almost uniquely qualified to identify with those people closest to Jesus’ heart, Jesus’ company, and Jesus’ ministry. After hundreds of years of seeing LGBT persons as living in Babylon, in an exile of their own making, the church is finally beginning to realize that they’re not in Babylon – they’re in Egypt, in a captivity imposed upon them by others. Of course LGBT persons are sinners – everyone is; but at last the church is beginning to recognize that this is a people incalculably more sinned against than sinning, with an inexhaustible store of wisdom and grace to teach their brothers and sisters…….

……LGBT people are made this way because God wanted ones like them to do a job no one else could do; and if the church is somewhat slow in affirming specific vocations and attending to long-hidden gifts it’s because it has hundreds of years of unlearning to do in breaking the habits of oppression and letting the Holy Spirit speak through an exiled people……..

…….What needs to happen now is repentance for the church’s ignorance and cruelty, a renewal of the church’s mission, and a reappraisal of the resources at the church’s disposal. And to lead the church as it discovers what it means to be a minority, to be misunderstood, mistrusted, and seen with contempt, who better to be its leaders and teachers than those who have been in that place all along. I wonder who those people might be…..

9 January 2013: Invitation: INVITATION TO WRITE A LETTER TO YOUR MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT IN SUPPORT FOR EQUAL MARRIAGE

As you may have seen from the recent press release, (which is available on the LGB&T Anglican Coalition website www.lgbtac.org.uk, and is also copied on the guidelines, see below) we have invited all of the constituent organisations of the LGB&T Anglican Coalition to encourage their members to write to their MPs as soon as possible to ask them to support the government proposals on equal marriage, and also to alert them to the need for a critical review of the so-called quadruple locks which are designed to protect those religious organisations that choose not to opt in.

You are invited to write to your MP as well

We strongly support the proposed legislation and we look forward to its implementation, but we are concerned that this should accurately reflect the will of Parliament and of the people and that it does not unduly defer to a minority group.

8 January 2013: Press Release: FOR IMMEDIATE USE. LGB&T ANGLICAN COALITION PRESS STATEMENT ON THE ADMISSION OF BISHOPS IN CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS TO THE EPISCOPATE

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition welcomes the House of Bishops decision, confirmed on the 4th January 2013*, to lift its moratorium of July 2011 on clergy in civil partnerships being nominated as episcopal candidates, even when living in conformity with the House of Bishops guidelines Issues in Human Sexuality.

The Bishops have decided that the requirements in its 2005 statement concerning the eligibility for ordination of those in civil partnerships, whose relationships are consistent with the teaching of the Church of England, will apply equally in relation to the episcopate.

We had been shocked and saddened by the imposition of the moratorium, pending the outcome of the review of civil partnerships by the House of Bishops working party chaired by the Bishop of Sodor and Man.  Although the lifting of the ban is only a small step it removes a glaring injustice, and was one of many recommendations in the LGB&T Anglican Coalition’s submission to the Church of England working party on civil partnerships.........

.........We are glad that the House has addressed this particular issue, but are surprised and disappointed that this appears to be the only outcome, even though the review was expected to be complete by the end of 2012. We look forward to seeing the full report

20 December 2012: Press Release: THE  SECOND LGB&T ANGLICAN COALITION PRESS STATEMENT ON EQUAL MARRIAGE

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition welcomes the government proposals published on 11 December, and in particular the following points:

• religious bodies are allowed to opt in voluntarily,

• no religious body or individual is compelled to act against conscience, and

• transgendered married people who apply for full gender recognition will no longer have to dissolve their marriages.

However, as Anglican Christians, laity and clergy, we are disappointed that the proposals to exclude both the Church of England and the Church in Wales appear to impose an additional barrier should these churches decide in future that they wish to marry same-sex as well as opposite-sex couples. If this were the case, it would reduce religious freedom.

As a Coalition we have repeatedly pointed out that the Church of England’s official submission did not reflect the views of the many members of the Church of England who are in favour of equal marriage, and we are also aware that there is support among many in the Church in Wales. These churches should be as free to opt in as any others.

The Archbishop of Wales has made it clear that any additional obstacle would be unwelcome. The Church of England’s leadership is reportedly shocked at such an outcome, though it appears to reflect precisely what the Church requested in its submission, published in June. Church reactions to the Government’s proposals do confirm that the Church of England’s official position is out of touch, not only with a significant number of its own members, but with the majority body of public opinion.

We will be advising the organisations in our coalition to invite all of their members to write to their MPs calling for a review of the implications of the so-called quadruple locks in the proposed legislation, especially the fourth, which relates to the Church of England and the Church in Wales. In our view this fourth lock would inhibit the religious freedom of the people we represent, and who are in favour of equal marriage in these churches.

10 December 2012: Letter: TEXT OF A LETTER TO THE RIGHT REVD J.P. WELBY, ARCHBISHOP ELECT OF CANTERBURY.

Dear Bishop Justin,

We are writing as the current co-chairs of the LGB&T Anglican Coalition to congratulate you on your nomination as Archbishop of Canterbury, and to assure you of our prayers as you prepare to assume the responsibilities of your new office.

The Coalition was heartened by your first press conference, particularly your statement that ‘We must have no truck with any form of homophobia, in any part of the church’, and your desire ‘to listen very attentively to the LGB&T communities and examine ... [your] own thinking on sexuality prayerfully and carefully.’

We would add our hope and expectation that you will also extend this approach to gender identity in order to include transgender people.

As a coalition of eight organisations or groups* committed to and working for the full inclusion of LGB&T people within the Church of England, with many supporters, and our huge range of experience in this area, we hope that you will be willing to meet with us at an early stage as you ponder these particular issues.

With the working parties on civil partnerships and human sexuality, commissioned by the House of Bishops, due to report soon, and government proposals for equal civil marriage about to be unveiled, it seems likely that sexuality and gender, will be high on the Church of England’s agenda in 2013. We look forward to engaging in dialogue with you about these matters and how they affect the Church’s mission and its ministry to all people.

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition is delighted that David Cameron has said the government’s proposals on equal marriage will include an option for ceremonies to take place on religious premises.

This outcome concurs with our own submission to the government’s consultation, and those of our partner organizations.

It is a matter of regret that the latest official Church of England response makes absolutely no mention of the breadth of views on this matter within the Church itself.

13 November 2012: Press Release: THE LGB&T ANGLICAN COALITION WELCOMES THE APPOINTMENT OF THE BISHOP OF DURHAM, JUSTIN WELBY AS THE NEXT ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY.

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition welcomes the appointment of the Bishop of Durham, Justin Welby as the next Archbishop of Canterbury. In his press conference last Friday he said this about sexuality:

“We also face deep differences over the issue of sexuality. It is absolutely right for the state to define the rights and status of people co-habiting in different forms of relationships, including civil partnerships. We must have no truck with any form of homophobia, in any part of the church. The Church of England is part of the worldwide church, with all the responsibilities that come from those links. What the church does here deeply affects the already greatly suffering churches in places like northern Nigeria, which I know well. I support the House of Bishops’ statement in the summer in answer to the government's consultation on same sex marriage. I know I need to listen very attentively to the LGBT communities, and examine my own thinking prayerfully and carefully. I am always averse to the language of exclusion, when what we are called to is to love in the same way as Jesus Christ loves us. Above all in the church we need to create safe spaces for these issues to be discussed honestly and in love.”

We are grateful for Bishop Justin’s openness. We appreciate his commitment to engage in listening to LGB&T communities and to challenge homophobia throughout the church. We look forward to dialogue with him as he seeks the way forward for mission and ministry in the Church of England.

The possibility of opening up marriage in Britain by law to same-sex couples has been criticised by some Christians but welcomed by others. One of the more thoughtful critics is theologian John Milbank, who has eloquently expressed some common arguments against change. This response by Savi Hensman suggests that, while he raises important issues, his analysis is ultimately flawed. Taking into account such topics as tradition, sexual ‘complementarity’, childbearing and sacrament, there is a strong case for equal marriage.

13 June 2012: Press Release: THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND IS MISSING THE POINT: 13TH JUNE 2012 - FOR IMMEDIATE USE

The Coalition has issued this comment on the official Church of England response to the Government consultation on Equal Civil Marriage.

The official Church of England response to the Government misses the key point. For many same-sex couples, equal marriage is not about legal rights, but a recognition that marriage offers something more – that marriage embraces something deeply spiritual which strengthens both the couple and society. In failing to recognise this, the Church of England has impoverished its own teaching on marriage.

As the recent letter to The Times by senior Church of England clergy noted, “The Church calls marriage holy or sacramental because the covenant relationship of faithful committed love between the couple reflects the covenanted love and commitment between God and his Church… So the fact that there are same-sex couples who want to embrace marriage should be a cause for rejoicing in the Christian Church.”

The widespread criticism of the statement from within the Church of England that has followed its publication reflects the scandalous lack of consultation in its preparation. There has been no discussion in the General Synod, or in the dioceses, and needless to say LGB&T members of the Church as represented by our Coalition partners, were also excluded from those discussions.

21 April 2012: News:  KEYNOTE ADDRESS “MAKING SPACE FOR AN HONEST CONVERSATION”, BY THE BISHOP OF SALISBURY TO THE CUTTING EDGE CONSORTIUM CONFERENCE: 21ST APRIL 2012

"In British society, the game is up. Gay people are equal members of our society", said the Bishop of Salisbury, the Rt. Revd Nicholas Holtam, to the Cutting Edge Consortium Conference 21st April 2012.

......"So, increasingly, there is an evangelical imperative for the Church to recognise that covenantal same sex relationships can be Godly and good for individuals and society; that they are at least like marriage for heterosexuals, and this is a development that many Christians in good faith warmly welcome. For LGBT people it raises a question about whether marriage is what they want, but for us as a Church there are things to affirm in this development.

It is a disaster that we have allowed the Church to be seen as the opposition to equal civil marriage".

21 April 2012: News: GAY MARRIAGE: ANGLICAN BISHOPS AND SENIOR CLERGY BACK SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IN LETTER TO THE TIMES

The Church of England has "nothing to fear" from the introduction of gay marriage, according to a group of senior bishops and clergymen.

The influential Anglicans said the prospect of same-sex marriage should be a "cause for rejoicing" and argued the perception that the majority of the Christian Church opposed legalising it was wrong.

In a letter to the Times, the signatories which include members of the General Synod, the governing body of the church, and high-ranking clergy, said: "Recent statements by church leaders past and present may have given the impression that the Church is universally opposed to the extension of civil marriage to same-sex couples. We believe that does not adequately reflect the range of opinion which exists within the Church of England"....................

This consultation sets out the government's proposals to enable same-sex couples to have a civil marriage.

The key proposals of the consultation are:

• to enable same-sex couples to have a civil marriage i.e. only civil ceremonies in a register office or approved premises (like a hotel)

• to make no changes to religious marriages. This will continue to only be legally possible between a man and a woman

• to retain civil partnerships for same-sex couples and allow couples already in a civil partnership to convert this into a marriage

• civil partnership registrations on religious premises will continue as is currently possible i.e. on a voluntary basis for faith groups and with no religious content

• individuals will, for the first time, be able legally to change their gender without having to end their marriage

An Act of Witness took place at General Synod on Thursday, 9 February to draw attention to the extent to which the Church of England relies on the many hundreds of LGB&T clergy who minister faithfully across the Church of England despite the institutional prejudice and suspicion they often face. Over 40 members and supporters of the LGB&T Anglican Coalition greeted synod members as they entered Church House Westminster.

Following news reports that the Archbishop of York has received racist emails after his recent interview, in which he opposed the Government’s consultation on same-sex marriage, we wish to make it clear that the LGB&T Anglican Coalition stands against all forms of prejudice including racism. 2 February 2012: Press Release: "EMBRACE CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS" BISHOPS TOLD

The time has come for a change in stance on Civil Partnerships is the message from pro-gay groups in the LGB&T Anglican Coalition.

In its submission to the House of Bishops review group on Civil Partnerships, (made public today) the Coalition calls on the Church of England to allow churches to register Civil Partnerships, authorise services of Thanksgiving and Dedication, and end the ban on Bishops in Civil Partnerships.

With over 47,000 Civil partnerships have been registered by the end of 2010, the submission notes that "As social attitudes towards those in same-sex relationships have become increasingly open and accepting, the Church of England is becoming increasingly isolated. This is in turn damaging both our mission and our ability to provide pastoral care to those in our parishes, congregations, and clergy." On offering Civil Partnerships in Parish Churches, the Coalition has already identified 95 churches who want to press ahead but General Synod would need to approve the application. PLEASE DISTRIBUTE THIS INFORMATION AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE

There will be an Act of Witness in Deans Yard Westminster on Thursday 9th February - the final day of General Synod's meetings in London.

It will be a silent Act of Witness for the thousands of faithful LGB&T Clergy who minister in the Church of England despite the discrimination and suspicion which they often suffer.

We will congregate in Dean's Yard by the entrance to Church House at 8:30am on Thursday 9th February in time to welcome General Synod members as they arrive for the day's business. There will also be an opportunity for prayer and to give leaflets out to people arriving at Church House. The Act of Witness will end by 10:15am.

With the House of Bishops review group on Sexuality beginning its work shortly, this is an important opportunity to draw attention to the extent to which the Church of England relies on LGB&T clergy. We hope that you will be able to join us on the day.

16 January 2012: PRESS RELEASE: 95 CHURCHES WANT TO REGISTER CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS

A limited survey by the LGB&T Anglican Coalition has already revealed that almost 100 Church of England churches would want to explore registering their buildings to offer Civil Partnerships - if the Church of England would allow it.

This comes as registration forms for religious buildings become available for the first time this month following the end of the Government ban in December.

The news that so many Anglican Churches would want to explore registration shows the disparity between the official stance of the Church of England and that of ordinary parishes.

On the 4th December the Government Equalities Office launched the first ever cross-Government action plan to advance transgender equality - "Advancing transgender equality: a plan for action". 2nd August 2011: Press Release: THE LGB&T ANGLICAN COALITION OFFERS ASSISTANCE IN SEXUALITY REVIEWS

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition has written to the House of Bishops to offer its help in the forthcoming reviews on sexuality and the church.

Following his announcement of reviews on Civil Partnerships and Guidelines on Human Sexuality by the Bishop of Norwich, the LGB&T Anglican Coalition has written to the Rt. Rev Graham James welcoming the reviews, and offering to meet with him in the near future.

The letter states, "We are sure that you will want to consult widely in the review process, and would like to offer our services at an early stage. We hope you will welcome this offer to meet a small team representing the Coalition to discuss how our members can contribute to this work."

This offer stands in sharp contrast to claims made by Anglican Mainstream that such discussions have already been taking place during the past year..... Neither the Coalition nor any of its member groups have yet been invited to take part in conversations of this kind..................

17th June 2011: Action: GOVERNMENT'S CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS ON RELIGIOUS PREMISES CONSULTATION

The LGB&T Anglican Coalition, LGCM and Changing Attitude have submitted responses to the Government’s CP Consultation. We need as many people as possible to reinforce our arguments and we encourage you to submit your own response.

The Consultation document itself and the form are both lengthy! We have prepared brief responses to the key questions. You’re welcome to read everything and respond to all the questions but if you’re short of time, use the ideas contained in the link below to make a quick response. Change the "I" to "We"as appropriate.

20 May 2011: Action: GOVERNMENT EQUALITIES OFFICE : TRANSGENDER EQUALITY ACTION PLAN

The Government Equalities Office will publish the first ever Government transgender equality action plan late in 2011. The action plan will outline commitments that the Government will deliver, within specific timescales, to improve equality for transgendered people.

Friday 28 January 2011: News: ARCHBISHOP CONDEMNS MURDER OF UGANDAN GAY HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams has made the following statement regarding the murder of the gay human rights activist David Kato Kisule in Uganda:

"The brutal murder of David Kato Kisule, a gay human rights activist, is profoundly shocking. Our prayers and deep sympathy go out for his family and friends - and for all who live in fear for their lives. Whatever the precise circumstances of his death, which have yet to be determined, we know that David Kato Kisule lived under the threat of violence and death. No one should have to live in such fear because of the bigotry of others. Such violence has been consistently condemned by the Anglican Communion worldwide. This event also makes it all the more urgent for the British Government to secure the safety of LGBT asylum seekers in the UK. This is a moment to take very serious stock and to address those attitudes of mind which endanger the lives of men and women belonging to sexual minorities."

17 November 2010: News: TRIBUTE TO SONIA JARDINIERE .

Sonia Jardiniere  (also known as Sonia Burgess) died at approximately 6:30 p.m. on the 25th October 2010 after she was seen to have been pushed under a tube train at King’s Cross Station. Sonia was a transgendered woman. Her alleged assailant who has been charged with murder is an asylum seeker and is also another transgendered woman.

Sonia was the finest immigration lawyer of her generation and was responsible for a number of trailblazing cases. She has also made an enormous, though largely hidden contribution to the integration of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people into the mainstream Anglican Church.

On the 7th July 2010 the UK Supreme Court in a unanimous judgment ruled that homosexual asylum seekers should be granted refugee status if going home would result in them being forced to conceal their sexuality. 11 October 2010: Press Release: TIME TO ACCEPT GAY BISHOPS SAYS ANGLICAN COALITION

In a recent interview with The Times the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, was unclear whether celibate but partnered gay clergy are acceptable as bishops in the Church of England. The archbishop stated his unwillingness to consider partnered gay men and lesbians as bishops because of their ‘particular choice of life, a partnership, and what the Church has to say about that.’ ......................... to the many lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people who have been called to ordained ministry but not to celibacy’. The Coalition calls the Church of England to a renewed study of sexuality in the light of modern scientific and theological understanding......................

9 July 2010: PRESS RELEASE: SOUTHWARK FAILURE DAMAGES CHURCH OF ENGLAND

Both recent meetings of the Crown Nominations Commission to choose a new

bishop for the Diocese of Southwark have been the subject of serious leaks

to a newspaper. This has resulted in huge personal pain and distress for

one candidate, Dr Jeffrey John, Dean of St Albans, for the second time in

seven years. It is particularly outrageous that some senior church

officials have suggested the leaks were engineered by supporters of Dr

John, rather than by those opposed to his nomination...................

A Service of Celebration for “Christians Together at Pride”, with the title of "Moving from the margins to the heart": took place at St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square London at 6pm on the day of the London Pride Parade. The Preacher was the Rev Canon Giles Goddard, chair of Inclusive Church, Priest in Charge of St John's Waterloo and Hon Canon of Southwark Cathedral .

The LGBT Anglican Coalition rejoices that Diane Bruce and Mary Glasspool will be consecrated as bishops in Los Angeles on the 15th May.

The Revd Diane Bruce and the Revd Mary Glasspool were each elected by large majorities of the laity, clergy and bishops of the Diocese of Los Angeles. Subsequently, their elections were confirmed by clear majorities, both of the bishops with jurisdiction in The Episcopal Church of the United States and of the standing committees of that church’s dioceses................
